The parking garage will be located next to the A28 motorway, on the grounds of De Uithof. The garage will offer space for 2,000 cars. Of these, 1,500 parking spaces are intended for employees of Utrecht University, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, Utrecht University Medical Center and future parties in the Utrecht Science Park. The remaining 500 parking spaces are intended for P+R use. These are public parking spaces with a day pass for streetcar and bus.
The parking garage provides a transfer from the car to other modes of transport, public transport and cycling, allowing easy access to the area behind.
Underneath the garage there will also be a bicycle storage area, streetcar and bus stop, and consideration has been given to pedestrians wishing to use the means of transportation. In addition, a climbing wall will be built on the south facade of the parking garage for climbers.
The garage has a unique construction to prevent a lot of search traffic. After the entrance, a choice is made between the 'yellow' and 'green' zone. These layers go up alternately. This saves half the traffic in the garage.
Charging points for electric cars will be located in the parking garage. These will also be supplied by IP Parking. In the start-up 4 units, later in the rollout this may increase to 48 units.
The parking equipment offers the option to choose parking only or the choice to also use public transport. The rate is based on this. The project is a collaboration between the Municipality of Utrecht, Utrecht University, Utrecht Medical Center and Utrecht University. Consultants for the parking installation by Movares and Spark parking, among others.
Attractive and accessible city
Offering P+R locations on the city's main approach roads is part of a coherent package of measures aimed at stimulating bicycle and public transport use, better circulation of car traffic and clean transport. In this way, Utrecht city council wants to keep the city liveable and accessible and remain an attractive place to do business.
Parking for employees.
The four parties attach great importance to good and sustainable accessibility to the city of Utrecht and its own facilities. With this parking garage, the UMC Utrecht, the University and the Hogeschool want to offer their employees a parking space with the possibility to comfortably transfer to public transport or the (ov-)fiets. The P+R facility limits the parking and traffic pressure in De Uithof. This is good for the accessibility, livability and further development of the area.
The jury of the international BIM Awards named this Utrecht P+R project at the Uithof as the world's best "concrete project. Main reason for the win: everything about the parking garage is skewed.
"Because everything is crooked about the parking garage, it is a huge challenge for the engineers working on the project. The narrow structure of the building makes it difficult to fit all the reinforcements in the right place," the jury said in a statement. The complicated concrete forms in the building are fitted in a special way.
